You're basically right though, I should have narrowed that to the past 50 years or so. And just to be clear, being an atheist is in no way a criticism. I'm an atheist, and I think there must be a lot more atheist politicians than admit to it. The problem is that they usually don't feel like they can admit it, and Pete Stark deserves a lot of credit for being out and open about it, even in San Francisco.
